Warm showers, rooftop bars, comfortable beds and kitchen’s equipped with more than one pot. It’s not easy finding accommodation with all of the above, in fact its incredibly rare! But, we did come across some Airbnbs and hostels which ticked all the boxes and sometimes even offered a little more.
We’ve put together this Slow Adventure certified list of some of our favourite places to stay in Central and South America so you can guarantee a warm welcome and a good nights sleep.
San Cristobal de las Casses, Mexico

Definitely one of our favourite Airbnb finds. The perfect location in San Cristobal, tucked away on a quiet street close to the centre of town. We had this apartment to ourselves for a week and loved out stay. Great value, private en suite room and a huge balcony perfect for a few sundowners.
Antigua Guatemala

A great base in Antigua, within walking distance to everything and a fully stocked kitchen. Rooms are small and basic but for £8 a night we weren’t complaining.
Granada, Nicaragua

Run by lovely Englishman Paul, this hostel has super speedy wifi and several extremely cute cats roaming throughout. A great location and brilliant value.
Medellin, Colombia

Los Patios is quite possibly our favourite hostel. Start your day with rooftop yoga, end it with salsa on the rooftop bar. This purpose built boutique hostel has incredibly friendly staff, a huge kitchen and perfect dorm rooms.
Quilotoa Loop, Ecuador

The first of our two recommendations for accommodation on the Quilotoa Loop. Llullu Llama provides much needed sanctuary after a days hiking with a well stocked bar, cosy rooms and three course dinner included. There’s even a jacuzzi and steam room for good measure.
Quilotoa Loop, Ecuador

Ridiculously warm and cosy, the food is excellent and you’ll appreciate the free hot drinks and snacks on arrival. Black Sheep Inn is also a self-sufficient eco lodge, 100% community operated.
Lima, Peru

The perfect location in the heart of Barranco, Lima. Belgian Geoffrey is the perfect host. For £18 a night for a double room it’s brilliant value for couples.
Valparaiso, Chile

Who wouldn’t want to wake up to this sunrise every morning? This artist in residence Airbnb was our favourite in South America. The location could not be better, in the heart of Valparaiso’s hillside community with stunning views over the city and docks. The room is huge too and the hosts are lovely people.
Puerto Natales, Patagonia, Chile

A brilliant hostel to start your Patagonian adventures in. WAP dorms are spacious and the beds are insanely cosy and comfortable. There’s also a restaurant attached which serves up excellent food as well as a kitchen for guests to use in the hostel itself.
Puerto Madryn, Patagonia, Argentina

Sometimes you get to a hostel and just don’t want to leave. That was the case here where we ended up staying longer than we did anywhere else, partly because of the great location and partly because we loved the hospitality from owner Gus and his team. This is the perfect base for whale watching – not to be missed!
