It might seem strange that Bolivia was home to Butch Cassidy for a time, but much of its dramatic scenery and landscape does have a feel of the American West. Bolivia would make a dream film set, from its eerie salt flats to the martian-like deserts and huge volcanos rising up from them.
One of the cheaper countries in South America, you can definitely stretch your cash further here than in nearby countries. But this is also reflected in much of the infrastructure of the country. Transport, food and accommodation are often more modest than in neighbours Chile and Peru.
So much of this country has to be seen to be believed. Where else would you find flamingos in a desert, or over 4,000 square miles of white, salty desert?
Eat We’ll be honest with you. Bolivia is not known for it’s culinary delights. Many will find food here to be poor, but it’s not without its hidden gems. If all else fails, huge local food markets will give you all the ingredients you need.
Sleep In the desert. It might not be glamorous but it’s definitely an experience. Just make sure you bring plenty of warm clothing for what will be a chilly night. If you want to push the boat out then check out some of the more glamorous salt-built hotel options.
Try Honing your photography skills here. You’re unlikely to visit a country with a more varied and pictureesque landscape. It’s the ideal place for photographers, particularly under the sparkling Milky Way in the Salar de Uyuni.
Do Choose carefully and take your time in Uyuni. Set aside some time to pick a good travel company to take you into the salt flats. It’s likely to be a once in a lifetime trip, and whilst you will want to adhere to a budget, you will want the best experience possible.
Don’t Forget to pack plenty of warm clothes. Believe it or not, the desert is freezing – probably the coldest we have been anywhere on our travels.
