Colombia

A country which over the last few decades would have worried family members when you told them about your upcoming trip there. Colombia itself is very much aware of it’s deadly recently history which has resulted in many travellers deeming it too risky to visit.

Now a country in reform, making moves to clean it’s still fragile political system and make itself a destination once again, their own slogan is entirely true – “Colombia, the only risk is wanting to stay”.

More than any other country we visited, we wished we had more time here. The colour, the people, the food and the variety of beauty that Colombia boasts made it a firm favourite. Definitely not a country to be missed, it’s quintessentially South American and we fully encourage you to immerse yourself in it.

Drink Coffee. Some stereotypes are true, and luckily this is one of them. Colombian coffee is incredible. Check out Café Jesús Martín in Salento. The best coffee we have ever tasted.

Sleep Easily one of the best hostels in South America, Los Patios in Medellin offers perfect dorms, super friendly staff and a beautiful rood-top bar.

Try Speaking to the locals, particularly in Medellin. A city that has been ripped apart within our lifetime, you would forgive the locals for being withdrawn or bitter, but they are anything but. A city of beautiful, happy people who were a pleasure spend time with.

Do Fly. Internal flights in Colombia are cheap and easy. It’s a vast country and we can tell you first hand that the long roads and dodgy transport will quickly deplete your Dramamine supplies.

Don’t be afraid to explore and get involved. Despite it’s reputation,  the Colombia of 2018 is a beautiful place. Comuna 13 in Medellin is a prime example. Take a walking tour here to see everything good about Colombia.
