Costa Rica

It’s unbelievable to think that Costa Rica is home to 4% of species on Earth. The country provides some stunning habitat for all manner of birds, mammals and insect and should be a top destination for any nature lover.

Costa Rica has put plenty behind its eco-tourism. A country that has disbanded its military and aims to run itself entirely on renewable energy, there’s no doubt that it has the right idea.

But we couldn’t help but think that their dependance on the habitat and animals within can often border on exploitation. Sometimes nature is best left to its own devices. Looking for that perfect Instagram shot can be to the detriment of their incredible native species.

Eat Gallo Pinto. Get used to eating a lot of rice and beans as this dish is served morning, noon and night. Thankfully we loved it, especially with a little salsa picante!

Sleep Shared dorms may well your best bet here, unless you have plenty of cash to burn. Costa Rica is an incredibly expensive country, and being so popular with tourism booming there’s little chance of finding many bargains.

Try Surfing. Costa Rica is blessed with two incredible coast lines on either side and makes for a surfer’s paradise. Even total beginners have the perfect opportunity to get to grips with a board here.

Do Tread carefully. Too many people have begun to cash in on Costa Rican wildlife. It’s big business but make sure you go with your gut when choosing excursions and respect the natural habitat and animals.

Don’t Expect your dollar to stretch very far. You have probably heard it all before, but take it from us, Costa Rica needs some good budgeting when it comes to eating, accommodation and travel.
